4 Generations launches on March 7th at the emerge Art Gallery in Mount Lawley on the 7th March 2012

It is with great pleasure that I can officially launch the countdown of my very first photographic exhibition: 4 Generations on the 7th March at the emerge Art Space in Mount Lawley.

More than 30 families took part in the three shoots for the exhibit back in 2010 and have been waiting patiently for the launch which is sure to be an emotional time for everyone involved. The exhibit shows photographs of great grandparents with their great grandchildren – all under 6-months-old – and is shot entirely in black and white.

For many of the participants – many of whom who were 80+ years-old – simply holding their teeny great grandchildren was a taxing task but one they all relished.

The photos vividly illustrate the profound love each and every one of the 4G Greats has for their beloved great grandchildren in a very personal, very often humerous – occasionally hysterical – and sometimes very moving way that only the lens can portray.

4Generations will make you laugh, it may make you cry, but whatever you feel when you look at these remarkable images, you will feel something and that, for me, is what photography is all about.

The 7th March will see a launch party at the emerge Art Space at a time yet-to-be confirmed (watch this space… I know many of you will be at work so we’re looking at something around 6-7pm to run for an hour or 2).

Each photograph will be displayed on a 20×30 mount and will be available for purchase on the day as limited edition prints. For each family there will also be the option of buying the digital masters of the prints so they can be retained forever and – hopefully – passed on down through the generations as a very unique part of their history.

4G was conceived in a dream. In the early hours of the morning one day back in 2010, I got out of my bed – still fast asleep – and wandered into my study where I wrote down a few words describing what I had seen while dreaming. The next day, I found a little note on my desk and 4 Generations was born!

I simply cannot wait for this exhinition to launch. I’m so excited to see all of the pictures edited and hanging on the emerge Art Space walls in all their glory, each one photographed and edited by yours truly with a great deal of love and affection not only for the subjects, but also for the entire families, many of whome had travelled considerable distances from around WA to take part.

Come and join us for the launch on March 7!

I sincereley hope my followers and fans on Facebook and my blog will come along and say hi on what is sure to be a very interesting evening.

As a bonus, I will also be displaying some of the shots taken during my 10 Pregnant Ladies shoot last year. These in themselves are a very unusual and entirely surprising set of photographs of 10 beautiful bumps displayed in a way that you will probably never see again… Think of the Himalayas!

I would like to thank my great mates Paul at Fitzgerald’s Photo Imaging in Perth as well as the inimitable Julian Masters at Pop Studios for sponsoring 4G. I’d also like to thank my beloved wife Sam for putting up with me during its development. I really couldn’t do what I do without her ongoing support and encouragement… Not to mention patience!

I sincereley hope you will find the time to come and join us for the launch on March 7… I’ll probably be shaking with nerves somwhere in a corner hopefully with a glass of red to keep me company!!

Much love,

Richard
