It could just be the funniest competition in history! Families from all over WA are, as we speak, desperately trying to make their little girls look like Mum. Little boys are, as you read this, having fake moustaches drawn on their little faces so they look like Dad.
Yes, Mini-Me fever has arrived and parents are snapping away their lookalike offspring to secure the unbelievable prize that Richard Barry, the photographer in Perth who puts the Q into cute photographs of babies and newborns, is giving away.
“This could get seriously funny” said Richard who will be glued to his Facebook page over the next few days to ensure that those parents entering their wee bubbs stick to the rules and don’t take up Photoshop expert classes in a bid to win.
“We want a good clean competition” said Richard. “Babies who look like their Mum or Dad in a single photo sent in via Facebook… I have seen some of these lookalikes close up and I gotta say, I’m glad I’m not a passport inspector!”
The winner of the competition will win a huge photographic prize:
The Little Sausage pack: A free photo session with Richard, widely regarded as the premier baby, newborn and maternity photographer in Australia. 15 hi-resolution digital negatives on a disc. Facebook and Internet negatives – 15 specially rendered digital negatives created just for the Internet and electroinc devices. Three 5×7 inch prints. Two 8×10 prints and one huge 16×20 print. All these prints will be professionally edited by Richard. One amazing DVD of all your chosen images that will also be posted to Richard’s private online gallery so your friends and family abroad can watch it wherever they are.
But that’s not all….
Richard is going to invite the winner and one friend or relative to come along to a very special location shoot in Perth (on a weekend yet to be announced) to see exactly how he gets those incredible photographs of babies and newborns that he is known for. This has never been done before and is only for the Mini-Me competition.
You had better go now. Get a photo of your bubb and your hubby or Mrs together and send it into the Mini-Me competition for a chance to win! To enter, simply go to Richard’s Facebook page and look to the left hand column. There you will see ‘contests’. Click it. Voila! You’re in
Alternatively, if you can see a bright orange bar at the bottom of this page, you can click it to be brought straight to the competition.
Enjoy!
This Friday the Facebook pages smashed through the 1450 mark and, as promised, I am announcing a very special competition to mark this incredibly significant milestone in Richard Barry Photography’s (RBP) development as a premier newborn photographer in Perth.
2011 was an incredible year and for 2012 we’re going to kick everything off with huge smiles! So, we’re going to have a wee competition that should bring in some seriously funny photographs of some of Perth’s most gorgeous families.
MiniMe... It’s the baby who looks most like his or her Mum or Dad!
Everyone has a funny pic of their bubb looking just like Dad, or the spitting image of Mum… We wanna see ‘em, so when the Facebook competition page launches, send the pic in and get ready to get all your friends to vote!
The winner will receive:
A free shoot, a Little Sausage Pack AND… wait for it…
For the very first time ever, I am going to invite the winner – plus one family member or friend – to come along to a location shoot for a full-session with a newborn baby.
The shoot will take place at a location (to be announced) but will be sure to require a whole heap of imagination and technical skill to achieve the results you expect from Richard Barry Photography. You can be part of the experience and see first-hand what it takes to create the incredible newborn photography Richard has become known for.
So as well as winning a whole heap of amazing photos, you’ll also have the opportunity to take part in a photographic experience you’ll remember for a lifetime.
Watch this space this week and on Facebook for details on the competition’s launch.
In the meantime, if your bubb looks like you or dad, get the camera out and start snapping!!
Etosha is the name of a Great National Park in Namibia and is home to some of the most stunning creatures on this planet.
It is also the name of this beautiful little girl whose delicate nature shone through during my newborn photography session with her and her family in Perth.
Little Etosha was an absolute pleasure to work for and even when things did get a bit too much and it was time for a cry, the tiniest little murmer of a weep was heard from this little toot.
Mum and Dad (well Mum mostly) made fab models and even Nanna got in on the action, making the entire shoot a really family-oriented occassion that was a complete pleasure.
And just look at the shots!
Not only did little Etosha pull off the ‘Hands n’ Cheeks‘ pose but she also slept so beautifully that I was able to do a lot of natural light and flash photography around her with not even a stir.
If you would like to book a session for your newborn or baby, click here.

2011 has been an amazing year for Richard Barry Photography on so many levels with well over 100 babies and newborns photographed and more than 50 Mums-to-be immortalised in some of my best maternity shots ever.
I’ve been inspired, I’ve been amazed and I’ve been exhausted and elated at the last 12 months. Mostly, I’ve been amazed that so many people in so many countries have seen my newborn photography and got in touch, just to say how much they enjoyed it. None more so than with my photograph of little Matilda and her puppy friends, whose baby photo went from Perth, all over the world in less than a week.
After appearing in the UK’s ‘Daily Mail’ and ‘The Sun’ newspapers, Matilda went global appearing on the American TV Show ‘Good Morning America’ before doing an around Europe tour!
On Red Bubble, Matilda won several awards and much praise from my peers who continue to encourage me in all my photographic ventures.
Playgroup WA appointed me as their official photographer and I can be found doing workshops with them in 2012 on a regular basis. Big hand to the wonderful Regina for choosing me to become Playgroup WA’s shooter. It’s a great privilege and I’m very honoured indeed.
Then I got selected as a finalist in the West Australian Professional Photographers Awards (WAPPA) which absolutely blew my mind as it was the very first pro competition I have ever entered and as far as I know, I was the only specialist baby and newborn photographer in Perth selected as a finalist. It was a tremendous experience rubbing shoulders with some of WA’s best known photographers, a few of who have been heroes of mine since I arrived in Perth back in ’07.
I also photographed one of the biggest single maternity shoots in Perth (that I know of) when 10 Pregnant Ladies descended on the studio in West Leederville for a very special session that I will be exhibiting next year as part of my Four Generations project. Four Generations also found a home in 2011 when the incredible emerge Art Gallery in Perth agreed to me having the exhibit there in March 2012. I cannot tell you how excited I am to be holding my very first exhibit at emerge. It’s a stunning venue and I simply cannot wait to see the faces of those families who took part in Four Generations.
Yes 2011 has been a fabulous year for Richard Barry Photography and by extension for baby, newborn and maternity photography in Perth and the wider Western Australia and as if to prove the point, in December, Photo Review Australia Magazine ran a 6-page editorial feature on my work which simply rocked my world (it put a huge grin on my Mum’s face too!!!).
Thank you to everyone who has supported my baby, newborn and maternity photography over the past year. The incredible support I have had from my clients, my friends and my wife and family has been incredible and very humbling.
Next year, watch out for more stunning photography and some very special projects I have been cooking up over the past few months
Have a great Christmas and a happy and safe New Year everyone.
Big Love
Richard

Photo Review Australia magazine’s December edition is now out and features a cover article on my baby, newborn and maternity photography.
The magazine’s cover features my shot ‘Hands n Cheeks’ with the gorgeous little Italia, who I photographed just over a year ago and whose image has been seen around the world after winning several awards.
The article in Photo Review Australia describes how Richard Barry Photography came into being following a wee incident (literally) with a baby back in 2009. Less than 2 years on and demand for my photography amazes me every single day.
The article looks at both my baby and newborn photography, as well as my love of maternity photography. Photographing pregnant women is a huge challenge and I think Mums in Perth want more exciting and dramatic photos… I work hard both in the studio where I use creative lighting to capture those dramatic curved shards of light and in natural light on locations all around Western Australia.
Photo Review Australia recognises the strides I am taking in editorialising maternity photography. Have a look at my maternity gallery to see where I am taking pregnancy photography. I think it’s one of the most exciting aspects of what I do.
I hope you will rush out and buy a copy of Photo Review Australia. This is my first ever front-cover story on my work and I’m very proud and just a little bowled over to have such an honour so early in my photographic career.
I think my Mum will be very pleased :^)
I hope you enjoy it too.
Richard

When Natasha and Shane made little Lawson, little did they know they’d be creating one of WA’s happiest wee toots, complete with a smile that is nothing short of perfect.
Capturing Lawson’s infectious smile on camera really wasn’t that difficult but I also wanted to create a family portrait for this gorgeous family that reflected their amazing energy which is apparent as soon as you meet them.
Natasha had heard about me through Cahoots, when she had her wedding album made there and the pressure was on to come up with a family portrait that was as good as the individual shots of little Lawson.
Bring all your whites!
I asked the Weddings to come along to my studio in West Leederville and to bring a lot of white clothing as well as a white duvet (doona) and pillows. The idea was to get the entire family rolling around on the studio floor with me making them all laugh so we could get a really special family portrait.
It was no surprise that in less than an hour, we got a whole series of wonderful family portraits that I’m as stoked about as the family.
Thanks to Shane and Natasha for allowing me to share some of their shots and their video here on my blog.
Big love
Richard
I regularly have people calling me – often in tears – as they tell me their experiences with ‘budget’ newborn photographers.
Whilst price is a consideration we all need to think about when buying anything from a computer to a home, newborn photography is something quite different because there is only a very small window of opportunity to get those incredibly special shots of your baby.
Get your choice of newborn photographer wrong and you will never get that opportunity back.
A client from my recent ‘Baby Day’ event, contacted me regarding some photos she had taken of her precious newborn and how upset she was when she considered the decisions she’d made based on the costs.
I thought it would be something for people to consider before choosing their newborn photographer. Here’s the email the client sent me:
Unfortunately I have learned the hard way that you should never let price be the deciding factor when choosing something as important as a photographer for your newborn.
I started searching for a photographer during the weeks leading up to my second child’s expected arrival. Rather than booking a shoot with a reputable photographer as I had done so for my first born, this time round I decided to cut costs. I opted to have photos taken by a local photographer who provided all images to disc at a very low price and by a professional photographer willing to do a free shoot as she was seeking newborn models to build up her portfolio. I figured between the two of them I would end up with a decent selection of images.
Baby arrived and it was time to get snapping! Just my luck, the professional photographer backed out. I gathered I scared her off by saying my baby had jaundice which would require additional editing. That left me with the cheap local photographer.
I knew moments after arriving at her home studio that I had made a big mistake and even more so when I received my disc. She was unable to give me clear directions on how to pose and did not assist with positioning my baby. Her camera skills were not much better than her interpersonal skills. To my dismay all of our family portraits were out of focus and the photos of my baby simply do not appeal to me. I honestly think I could have done a better job. Funny enough I was more disappointed that I wasted my time than the money I wasted attending the session.
I had intended to locate an alternative photographer and book another session but I procrastinated. I held off a few days for her jaundice to dissipate further, then a few extra days for her heat rash to go. The thought of getting the family picture perfect again felt like a task and a half and before I knew it she was not longer tinny tiny. Today she is only 8 weeks young and I have realised by being tight with my money I threw away my opportunity for a talented artist to do a full photo shoot of my daughter in the adorable newborn poses. If only I could turn back time.
I am grateful that I was lucky enough to take part in Richard Barry’s Baby Day during October 2011. I have 5 treasurable images of my daughter taken at 3 and a half weeks. Had I not been so lucky I would be without invaluable images of my daughter and I would be beyond devastated. I’m convinced years from now I will still be kicking myself for not booking my newborn session with Richard.
Richard’s work speaks for itself so there is no need for me to go on and tell you how talented he is. Instead I want to emphasise to not follow in my footsteps. Don’t cut costs, if you have the funds pay that little bit extra to have your newborn photos taken by someone great. If you truly can’t afford it suggest family and friends give money as a birth gift or purchase a gift voucher. Trust me you will regret it otherwise.
Let’s face it, wouldn’t one adorable image of your bundle of joy be worth cracking open the piggy bank for?

If you are considering having newborn shots taken make sure you follow these simple steps:
1 Check the photographer’s latest work on their website gallery
2 Visit their Facebook gallery too and see what people are saying about their work
3 Do a search on the photographer’s name – that should reveal what people are really saying about their experiences with the photographer
If you are concerned about pricing, contact me and ask about my installment options. For more information on pricing, please click here.
I will always try to help you get the best photographs possible, whatever your budget.
